Jon Phillip Spiers, MD, JD

Jon Phillip Spiers is an accomplished attorney and an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon.

When a hand injury halted his career in the operating room, he went on to pursue a new professional calling in healthcare law, realizing that his fundamental knowledge of the industry and ability to relate to the professional challenges of colleagues, would be a powerful way to contribute to the improvement of healthcare.

Dr. Spiers is a native of Georgia. He graduated from Duke University in 1984, the attended medical school at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences. Dr. Spiers completed a general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee in 1994. During his rigorous training, he conducted basic laboratory research into organ preservation and resuscitation from traumatic injuries, and was recognized by the medical student body as outstanding clinical instructor. He followed his general surgical training with a residency in cardiac and thoracic surgery at the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. 

Dr. Spiers was among the first US surgeons to perform “keyhole” cardiac surgery, in addition to developing breakthrough techniques for the endovascular treatment of peripheral vascular disease. In 2011, he graduated the University of Houston Law Center in Houston, Texas, and is currently the Principal in private practice at the Spiers Group. Dr. Spiers’ medical board certifications include the American Board of Surgery (1995), American Board of Thoracic Surgery (1997/2007) and the American Board of Vascular Medicine (2007). Although no longer actively practicing medicine, he continues to maintain his medical license.

Dr. Spiers brings twenty years of clinical healthcare experience to bear on the legal complexities of his client’s cases. In many instances, he has faced similar issues firsthand and understands what is at stake both on a personal and professional level. From handling regulatory violations, contract and licensing issues, as well as using his experience to support clients as they undertake new ventures, Dr. Spiers provides invaluable insight on nuances within the healthcare industry and skillful representation and guidance through complicated legal issues faced by his clients.
